The Volunteers

Volunteers have worked with us throughout the project. We ran two Oral History Training Days and a Radio Course at Ujima. The volunteers have contributed their ideas and their time; researching, interviewing, transcribing, making a radio documentary, designing a flyer and helping out at filming and recording sessions.

The project appealed to me because I am a second generation English black male. My mother and family used to tell me stories about how things used to be in the 1960’s for Caribbean people living in Bristol. I also have firsthand experience of life in Bristol from the seventies up to today. I have witnessed the St Pauls riots, racism and educational inequality and relished a chance to show something positive about the elders from my community. They seemed to have lost their voice in recent years due to negative images portrayed in the media and I was determined to give it back to them. I thank Mary Ingoldby and her team at Firstborn for giving me the chance to do this.
